The PVC industry’s commitment to Sustainable Development

The European PVC industry believes in a far-ranging vision that requires an open, collaborative and innovative approach. Beyond tackling sustainability challenges that are specific to PVC, the industry aims to become a major contributor to the journey of a society becoming sustainable.

Building on the progress made by its first 10-year voluntary commitment (Vinyl 2010), the VinylPlus programme aims to help the European industry realise the vision of PVC being a preferred material in terms of quality, value and environmental safety. The industry believes that PVC can help others to reach their sustainability goals and be seen as a safe material providing convenience, comfort and high social value as well as having good sustainability credentials. This will be achieved by leadership and commitment from an industry working with all of its stakeholders in an open and honest way.

VinylPlus commits the European PVC industry to working towards the more efficient use and control of PVC throughout its life cycle.

Specific VinylPlus ‘closing the loop’ targets:

  • Recycle 800,000 tonnes/year of PVC by 2020.
  • Develop and exploit innovative technology to recycle 100,000 tonnes/year of difficult to recycle PVC material (within the overall 800,000 tonnes/year recycling target) by 2020.
  • Address the issue of legacy additives and deliver a status report within each annual VinylPlus Progress Report.

VinylPlus is working on the development of a Product Label for PVC products. Obtaining that badge will be linked to using recyclate obtained from Recovinyl’s certified network.
